This translation by the NDI Foundation is to assist the lay reader. To provide a clear, accessible interpretation of the original article, we eliminated or simplified some technical detail and complicated scientific language. We concentrated our translation on those aspects of the article dealing directly with NDI. The NDI Foundation thanks the researchers for their work toward understanding and more effectively treating this disorder.

In their reply, Schofer, et al., agree that their patient might have had NDI. They also agree that intracerebral calcification could be a consequence of severe dehydration resulting from NDI, especially in infancy. However, they still argue that the calcification in their patients may not have been due to NDI. First, one of the brothers never had any proven episodes of dehydration. Second, both brothers had structural deformations unusual for NDI. These deformations partly resembled those described for Cockayne syndrome.
