Dr. Verkman is with the Cardiovascular Research Institute of the University of California in San Francisco. His long-standing interest in biophysics and molecular biology goes back to 1984. He was drawn to the field of NDI at the time Aquaporin-2 was cloned. This significant breakthrough unlocked many of the mysteries of water channel function and presented him with challenging new avenues of research.
Dr. Verkman feels that, in the last several years, substantial progress has been made toward understand the mechanics of cellular water transport . He sees his work in the development of knock out mice for water channels as a valuable contribution toward understanding exactly how aquaporins affect urinary concentrating ability.

When asked what the future holds in regards to a permanent cure for NDI patients, Dr. Verkman explained that he sees little hope for a cure in the next decade or two, but continuing advances in the challenging gene therapy field may produce results in twenty or thirty years. He feels a similar time line is reasonable for the development of a viable stem cell gene therapy which would repair damaged genes and prevent them from being passed down to future generations.
Dr. Verkman, a native of New York City, now lives with his wife in San Francisco, California. He enjoys playing golf and squash and travels whenever his schedule permits.
