Mental retardation. A mental disorder characterized by significantly sub-average general intellectual functioning associated with impairments in adaptive behavior and manifested during the developmental period. It is classified on the basis of severity as mild , moderate , severe , and profound ; a fifth subgroup, borderline intellectual functioning, is sometimes included.
