A heritable disorder marked by cysts scattered throughout both kidneys. It occurs in two unrelated forms:
The autosomal recessive type (formerly called the infantile form) may be congenital or appear at any time during childhood. There is a high perinatal mortality rate, and almost all cases lead to hypertension. In older children cystic and fibrotic disease of the liver may be associated.
The autosomal dominant type (formerly called the adult form) is marked by progressive deterioration of renal function. A similar acquired disease sometimes accompanies end-stage renal disease and is called acquired cystic disease of kidney . Called also polycystic kidneys , polycystic renal disease , and polycystic kidney disease .
