DEFINITION:
- systemic lupus erythematosus
-
A chronic, remitting, relapsing, inflammatory, often febrile multisystemic disorder of connective tissue, acute or insidious in onset, characterized principally by involvement of the skin (cutaneous lupus erythematosus), joints, kidneys, and serosal membranes. It is of unknown etiology, but it is thought to represent a failure of regulatory mechanisms of the autoimmune system, as suggested by the high level of numerous autoantibodies against nuclear and cytoplasmic cellular components. It is marked by a wide variety of abnormalities, including arthritis and arthralgias, nephritis, central nervous system manifestations, pleurisy, pericarditis, leukopenia or thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and positive LE-cell preparations. Abbreviated SLE.
