A toxic substance formed by species of certain bacteria (e.g., Bacillus, Bordetella, Clostridium, Corynebacterium, Escherichia, Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Vibrio, Salmonella, Shigella, Yersinia) that is found outside the bacteria cell, or free in the culture medium. Exotoxins are heat-labile and protein in nature. They are detoxified with retention of antigenicity by treatment with formaldehyde (formol toxoid), and are the most poisonous substances known to humans.
