1. A receptor adapted for excitation by chemical substances, e.g., olfactory receptor and gustatory receptor.
2. A sense organ such as the carotid body, the aortic bodies, or the glomus jugulare, which is sensitive to chemical changes in the blood stream, especially reduced oxygen content, and reflexly increases both respiration and blood pressure.
3. A supposed group of atoms in cell protoplasm having the power of fixing chemicals, in the same way as bacterial poisons are fixed. Called also "chemoceptor."
